Benita

Like many other Americans, Benita was introduced to yoga in the 1970s by Lilias Folan's public television program - Lilias! Yoga and You. Benita began practicing in her small living room with her infant son looking on and soon fell in love with yoga. Eventually she found a yoga home in an Iyengar studio and studied there for many years, giving her a strong base in alignment that continues to serve her practice as well as her teaching.

Benita says her yoga practice has changed dramatically over the years and has grown to include the other limbs of yoga, beyond the asana practice that first caught her attention. Her goal in teaching is to encourage her students to develop a practice that serves them and their individual needs.

Due to a series of injuries beginning in childhood, Benita has a special understanding of physical limitations and chronic pain. She believes that through yoga a nourishing practice is possible despite physical limitations. Through her own experience Benita says that injuries and chronic pain can open up opportunities to explore oneself through yoga. One of her favorite quotes is from B.K.S. Iyengar,"Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured." This philosophy guides her personal practice and her teaching.
